Umlani’s philosophy of simplistic luxury and ‘getting back to nature‘ is enhanced by the romance of operating without electricity. Enjoy the warm atmosphere of candlelight and oil lamps and open-air bush showers fuelled by wood fires.

All accommodation options have en-suite facilities including open-air bush showers for the ultimate stargazing experience.  They also offer comfortable beds, crisp white linen, soft towels, mosquito netting, and insect repellent and standard bathroom amenities.

There is also complimentary bottled water, although the tap water is perfectly safe to drink.

Umlani Bushcamp offers an exciting, safe experience in Big Five territory with two game drives per day. View lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino, in more than 10 000 hectares (24 000 acres) of traversing area. The camp is also home to more than 40 mammal species and 350 bird species.

In the evening you will be treated to pre-dinner drinks in the traditional boma around the fire, followed by one of Umlani’s award winning meals in the candlelit dining room, or out in the open riverbed surrounded by flares and cauldron fires.

Double Huts
The four double huts come with double beds, en-suite facilities including an open-air bush shower. Comfortably-fitted with white mosquito nets, crisp white linen and towels as well as with standard bathroom amenities, the huts also have bottled water and insect repellent. A maximum of two guests.

Eco Hut
Built to enhance thermal storage qualities, it is lovely and warm when cold outside and much cooler when hot outside. Same “close to nature” experience with outdoor shower and bathroom but with little extra luxuries. Two guests can be accommodated in the Eco Rondavel.

Umlani is located in the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, which shares an unfenced border with the Kruger National Park close to Hoedspruit, approximately 5-6 hour’s drive from Johannesburg International Airport.

The simplest and most affordable way to get between Johannesburg and the lodge is to make use of the Ashtons Kruger Shuttle, which operates daily in both directions between Johannesburg and Hoedspruit. Please note that the shuttle rates are included in our packages. Before/after the 5-6 hour road transfer you will be transferred between the Timbavati Main Gate and the lodge. Getting to and from Umlani could not be simpler!

Meet the Ashtons Kruger Shuttle at OR Tambo Airport bus Terminal 06h45 and start your journey to the Kruger. On arrival in the Greater Kruger the shuttle will drop you off at the Bush Pub & Inn close to Timbavati Main gate where you will be met by your onwards transfer vehicle that will take you all the way to your Lodge and get you settled in before light lunch is served in the bar, late afternoon, arm yourself with binoculars and cameras and set off with your ranger in an open Landrover. Enjoy sundowners in the Bush!  

Back at the Lodge, you will be treated to pre-dinner drinks in the traditional boma around the fire, followed by one of Umlani’s award winning meals in the candlelit dining room, or out in the open riverbed surrounded by flares and cauldron fires.

Retire to your comfortable room, with a multitude of memories, to prepare yourself for the excitement of the day ahead.

DAY 2 -3 (or more)

Wake-up call in summer at 5am and winter at 5h30am.

Have some light snacks, coffee, tea, muffins or pancakes before setting off for your Bush walk and/or game drive in search for game with the opportunity to see lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino on safe, expertly guided game drives and bush walks. The area is also home to more than 40 mammal species and 350 bird species.

On return to camp enjoy a hearty breakfast around 09h30.

Relax through midday hours around the pool, in hammocks, in the bar or at the tree house overlooking Marco’s dam.

Light Lunch is served at the bar by 13h30.

At 4pm depart for your second game drive into the bush in search for game and enjoy sundowners before continuing with the driver in search for nocturnal predators.


Set off at first light for your final guided game activity – appreciating the typical scents and sounds of the bush you’ll realise how much you’ve learned already!  After breakfast back at the safari camp it’s time to pack up and say our reluctant goodbyes; you are then transferred back to meet the Ashtons Kruger Shuttle bound for Johannesburg. Whatever you have seen and done you will have had an up-close and personal experience of the real African bush and wildlife! And a whole new world of experiences waits for your next visit.
