A safari at nThambo Tree Camp includes guided game drives through a wildlife area rich in game and part of the huge wilderness area that is the Greater Kruger sharing unfenced borders with the Kruger National Park.

nThambo  has five chalets that sleep two people each which creates an intimate and personal safari experience.The accommodation is unique with bedrooms at eye-level with the trees, offering a different perspective from the private balconies.

All chalets are en-suite with a shower and toilet. None of the chalets have baths, only showers. Lighting is provided via solarpower and a plug point in each chalet is available for guests to charge their camera batteries.There is an outdoor lounge and dining area, under thatch, that offers guests beautiful views of the plain and small waterhole in front of camp, as well as the Drakensberg mountain range in the distance. A traditional boma completes a camp that captures the traditional bush camp safari experience.

The activities are conducted by excellent guides and Shangaan trackers in the mornings and evenings. Night drives are also an option for those who want to see the nocturnal wildlife, while optional bush walks can be arranged too. The Southern Klaserie is home to all the large animals that many people wish to see on safari, including the Big 5, giraffe, hyena and many antelope and bird species. The flexibility of the small camp means that guides can take guests out for special sightings out of usual game drive hours.

Traditional Safari Dining

nThmabo pride themselves on offering and intimate safari dining experience, where guests dine together at a set time. A Table is set up and guests can enjoy anything from traditional braai (Barbeque)  even to a homemade potjie. The atmosphere is always casual, creating a homely experience. The Team at nThambo are flexible when is comes to guest’s needs and will go out of their way to ensure a special occasion is celebrated so if there is something special you can request this beforehand.

At nThambo there are 5 tree house style en-suite Chalets – each decorated uniquely and authentic yet comfortable, walls are made from canvas tents and the roof is thatched. Verandah overlooking the plains with views of the Drakensberg.

There is an outdoor lounge and dining area, under thatch, that offers guests beautiful views of the plain and small waterhole in front of camp, as well as the Drakensberg mountain range in the distance. A pool and deck with sun loungers and umbrellas completes the main area and offers a refreshing spot to relax all year round.

A traditional boma area with fire place captures the traditional bush camp safari experience. Open to the sky and surrounded by a wooden kraal, the boma is where the warm evenings are spent sharing stories of the bush.

In addition guests will experience a traditional South African braaivleis (barbecued meat) cooked over the open fire. To truly immerse yourself in the rustic bush experience, the main area is lit with lanterns while plug points in the chalets can be used to charge your camera batteries.There is also wifi available in the lounge and bar area.

During the hot summer months guests can relax around the splash pool – don’t be surprised if there is a herd of elephants approaching to drink the water!


nThambo Tree camps are situated in the heart of the Southern Klaserie which is part of the Greater Kruger, close to Hoedspruit, approximately 5-6 hour’s drive from Johannesburg International Airport.

The simplest and most affordable way to get between Johannesburg and the lodge is to make use of the Ashtons Kruger Shuttle, which operates daily in both directions between Johannesburg and Hoedspruit. Please note that the shuttle rates are included in our packages. Before/after the 5-6 hour road transfer you will be transferred between the Bush Pub Inn (Close to the Main Gate) and nThambo Tree Camp. Getting to and from nThambo could not be simpler!


  • The Greater Kruger is a malaria area – please take your own precautions

Meet the Ashtons Kruger Shuttle at OR Tambo Airport bus Terminal 06h45 and start your journey to the Kruger. On arrival in the Greater Kruger the shuttle will drop you off at the Bush Pub Inn situated closed the to Timbavati main gate where nThambo Tree Camp will be waiting to take you into the reserve to your Lodge and get you settled in before Lunch is served, followed by an afternoon guided game activity and dinner.

DAYS 2 – 3 (or more)

During Summer, an early wake-up call at 05h00 and 05h45 in winter- adventure out on your morning game drive. Back at camp by 09h00 you will enjoy a hearty breakfast. Between 11h00-14h30 guests have time to themselves, relax with a book or take a dip in the pool. Enjoy Lunch from 14h30 consisting of salads, cheese, cold meat and a light quiche or pie. Afternoon game drive will start around 15h30 and stop for snacks and drinks and enjoy the sunset. Return to the Lodge at 19h30 and freshen up before dinner at 20h30.


Set off at first light for your final guided game activity – appreciating the typical scents and sounds of the bush you’ll realise how much you’ve learned already! After breakfast back at the safari camp it’s time to pack up and say our reluctant goodbyes; you are then transferred back to meet the Ashtons Kruger Shuttle bound for Johannesburg. Whatever you have seen and done you will have had an up-close and personal experience of the real African bush and wildlife! And a whole new world of experiences awaits for your next visit
